After seven long years it is hard to believe that the book launch date for The Gift Is You is July 29, 2014. As mentioned in a previous blog, this date is exactly thirteen years since my go-kart racing accident. So much has happened during this time!
During the writing of The Gift Is You many important decisions had to be made: what would the content be, who would be on my writing team, who would market the book, who would be the publisher, and so on. Each of these decisions—and others—took considerable thought and time.
One of the areas I spent deep thought on was how the cost of the production was going to be covered and what I was going to do with the net profits. The cost of producing the book has been more than any member of my team or I would have dreamed. Because of this, most of my team felt the profits should be used to help defray the final cost. To most that makes sense. I however never really felt it should be that way.
I would like to explain. If it is really true that God wanted this book written to encourage those going through difficult times and tragedies, why would He want me to keep the profits from His book? Wouldn’t you think He would want the money to help others? That was my thinking. He wants a win-win situation. This was a truly easy decision for me. For others on my team, it was not.
So the real decision I had to make was whom the money should go to. That was a question I spent a great deal of time on. So many people and organizations I have been involved in have touched my life during these last several years. Two of those I have a special interest in are the Center for Women’s and Children’s Health and Well Being (CWCHWB) and the Wyandotte Clinic for the Working Uninsured (WCWU).
The CWCHWB, which I founded approximately five years ago, is very dear to me. The Center provides free mammograms to women in need and sleep sacks to all babies delivered at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital and Henry Ford Hospital. (www.HenryFord.com/CWCHWB)
The WCWU is also quite important to me. Each month, I volunteer my time there seeing women that work but have no health insurance. My volunteer team and I are blessed each time we work in the clinic. (www.Wyandotteclinic.com)
So one might think the CWCHWB and WCWU would be the two charities I would pick. I did consider that for a long time but decided on the two that I would like to talk about next. They are Northwest Haiti Christian Mission (NWHCM) and Laban Ministries International.
The Northwest Haiti Christian Mission supplies physical and spiritual needs to some of the poorest people in the world. As many of you know, for three years prior to my go-kart racing accident I went to Haiti as a medical missionary. The mission was NWHCM. There my heart was changed. My OB/GYN resident, Dr. Craig Hartman, and I would do deliveries and GYN surgeries on the poorest of the poor. In 1999 after a delivery, I was asked to be the godfather to baby Sue. What an honor and an emotional time it was for me. She is now fourteen years old. Prior to my accident I had planned on volunteering at this mission three months of every year after I retired from private practice. NWHCM does so many great things that even though I can’t go there anymore I wanted to help as much as I could by giving one-half of the profits from The Gift is You. You can find out more about NWHCM at www.nwhcm.org.
The other charity the net profits are going to is Laban Ministries International. During my recovery the gospel song “Press On” by Selah was very important to me. I would listen to it in the quietness of my home many times a day. At that time it was the number-one gospel record in the country. As you will discover in The Gift is You, Selah sang that song when I gave my first testimony at my church in December 2001. Selah’s parents, Jim and Nancy Smith, are missionaries who attend our church. Their ministry is Laban Ministries International. Their ministry is to the people of the Congo in Africa. It is hard to believe that through the Laban Ministries over 18,000 Africans each year accept Jesus as their Savoir. I am honored that half of my net profits will go to Laban Ministries. For more information, visit www.labanministries.org.
I hope you now have a better understanding of where the profits from The Gift is You will be going—and why. What a special feeling it is for me to know that not only are people being encouraged because of The Gift is You but also special charities are benefiting.
Thank you for being in my mission.
David
